How to listen to your own music (or a podcast, or the radio, or anything else) while playing N-Gage games

To get the most out of this tutorial, watch the video above and then read the text below.

N-Gage-compatible phones can do lots of things at once

All N-Gage-compatible phones are multitasking smartphones, which means they can run several applications at once and you can switch between them.

To start a new app just press the menu button (the swirly key).

To switch between apps, hold down the menu button. Holding down the menu button brings up what's known as a "task switcher", which displays icons for all the applications currently running. When the task switcher appears, just click on the icon of the app you want to switch to.

To stop an app running, just switch to it and select the exit option from that app's menu.

There is a limit on how many apps can run at once, because each app takes up a certain amount of the phone's RAM, and if the RAM runs out the phone crashes.

Another downside of multitasking is that running lots of apps at once uses up more battery life, so your phone will need charging more often if you multitask a lot.

How to listen to your own music (or anything else) while playing an N-Gage game

1. Start up the N-Gage game as normal through the N-Gage application.

2. Go to the game's settings screen and turn down its own music volume. You might want to also turn down the sound effects volume if you just want to hear your music.

3. Press the menu button (swirly key) once. Go to the music player (or the podcasting app, or the radio app, or internet radio, or whatever it is you want to listen to) and start the music playing.

4. Hold down the menu button until the task switching screen appears, and select the N-Gage icon.

5. You'll be back in the N-Gage game but your music will be playing in the background. You can now carry on playing as normal.

If you want to change tracks hold the menu button again and select the music player's icon. You can go back and forth between the game and the player (and any other running apps too) by holding down the menu button.

Be careful not to touch the phone's built-in volume control during the N-Gage game as it may turn the game's own music back on. Switch to the music player before using the volume control if you want to adjust the volume of your music.
